Heat Flux Events

About

For the purposes of the composites linked at left, an SSW with heat flux event (HFE) occurs when the 20 day average meridional eddy heat flux exceeds 4.0 K m/s within 20 days of the SSW event.

New Method

To locate events: Heat flux 20 day average anomaly for each day is found, then checked against climatological bounds for that day. If the anomaly is greater than some multiple of σ, it is counted as a "large" heat flux event. The duration is found using the same method for each successive day.
